Resurrection Sunday - Reincarnation
Season: Past, Summer
Reincarnation 1

Summer, last year.
(deep sigh)
Forgive my intrusion. But what're you doing in here with all the lights off, Oogami?
... The hell do you want, huh?

Don't snap at me. I saw you in here while I was passing by and was just curious.
The Student Council's had to intensify their patrols on account of the endless amount of loitering offenders, you see.
I'm sure you're well aware that Kiryuu is lending us a hand after we performed together as DEADMANZ.
It's been really effective how he keeps those delinquents in check with just a stern look.
Actually, he's always the one lending me a hand.
Keh. No one asked, and yet you won't stop flappin' those gums.
That Student Council of yours sounds real busy, huh? Hasumi-senpai.
How 'bout showin' up at our lessons for once? Not that anything would change if ya did.
Sakuma-senpai's been abroad for forever and I don't know what to do besides keep practicin' my guitar all alone.
You created DEADMANZ, right? So go ahead and get involved already.
Heh. To think there'd eventually be a day where you of all people would lecture me. How backwards.
But unfortunately, I think DEADMANZ is on its last leg. You'd be better off starting fresh, gathering friends to form a new unit.
More precisely, I can take care of the documents needed for forming and disbanding a unit. I'll cooperate with you as much as I can, so tell me your demands.
......
The Light Music Club is quite large, isn’t it? It’s the perfect environment for finding talented and skilled musicians.
You for real? You know every last one of 'em's gotta be one of Sakuma-senpai's groupies.
One good long look'll tell ya what the club room's like when he's gone.
It ain't good enough. I wanna sing with even more passion—with the kinda intensity that drains every last bit of me, like my whole body's burnin' out for it.
Blazing enough to carve through the crust and break through the other side of the world...
I wanna throw an intense, exhilaratin' concert like that. So they've gotta be the kinda idiot who'll want along for the ride if we're gonna be buds.
There's no one like that around me right now. Every single one of 'em's got that dead look in their eyes, like they're just goin' through the motions.
It's so damn frustrating. Who's the one who made the world like this, anyway?
Bring down the mastermind behind everything and all's well that ends well, huh. It would make things a lot easier. But sadly, that's not how it works.
I'm busy with Student Council work right now, so I can't join in on our idol activities. I get that it might seem like I'm going off track. Even so, are you going to berate me?
... Could be worse. You know it's the wrong move, but you're still takin' a route you believe in to chase your dreams, am I right?
I think it's great. No way I could do the same. I ain't smart enough for all that.
On the flip side, I can't stand your ass like this. Forget all this useless crap and just hold a live with me.
... Forgive me. You don't know how glad I'd be if I could enjoy a simple life like yours. But it's impossible for me. I'm sorry, Oogami.
I don't get you. A man shouldn't bow his head for no damn reason!
Yeah. You're right... I'll hold up and move forward with confidence.
... Oogami. I heard a rumor that Sakuma-san returned home early in secret.
Just temporarily, and so no one can report the circumstances of his secret activities overseas.
That miserable look on your face won’t sit well with him when he gets back. So quit sulking, focus, and keep putting in the effort.
Your hard work will pay off for sure. No — I'll show you a world where it will.
Aahn? Ugh, next time start with the important stuff first, ya damn moron! Sakuma-senpai's back?!
Hyahah! About time. ✰
There's no time for standin' around gossipin' here now! I've gotta try and knock him on his ass with a surprise new song!

Forgive me. I'm still at a crossroad and not ready to face him just yet.

We'd still be on good terms if so. But evidently I took the wrong road, and now our paths will likely never cross again1.

"Andeddo"?
Yeah. That's the name.
They've been experimenting with this "unit system" since spring, and only now did they put the group together.
By some twist of fate, I ended up joining as well.
Just attending class won't get me the results I want. I want to work with talented people and get stronger together.
Very true. Improving one's self is essential. The unit system, hmm... I should search for an appropriate group to join.
Others tend to keep me at a distance, hence I'm not sure if I'll find anyone willing to take me in. Perhaps because of the sword I carry...
I might be coming across as needlessly intimidating.
But the sword is the soul of a samurai, isn't it? I don't think you should have to give it up.
Indeed. I've been wearing this blade at my side since childhood. Truthfully, I feel a bit uneasy without it, even when I'm on stage.
But I'm sure it's impossible my style of "aidoru" to subsist.
Come what may, I've a grasp on your situation now. So you'll be training with this "Andeddo" group from here on. This is where we part ways, then.
Yeah. Thank you... for always hanging out with me after school, Kanzaki.
Whenever I return to my country, people are really interested in hearing about my experiences in Japan.
They keep asking me questions like what I bought or where I took that picture.
Having you to always guide me here and there when it came to Japan's customs and culture helped considerably.
Why, no need to thank me. I'm free, essentially, and thanks to you, Adonis-dono, I can abscond from the tedium that comes with having too much time after school.
If you're interested, Kanzaki, I could introduce you to UNDEAD.

It'd be really reassuring to have you there with me, Kanzaki.
Hmm, Oogami... right. The one who often gets in trouble with Hasumi-dono for violating school regulations, much like myself.
He seems a good-natured individual despite the attitude and foul mouth, though that's merely my impression.
Yeah. Do you remember when Oogami and Hasumi-senpai teamed up and called themselves DEADMANZ?
Apparently that was the basis for UNDEAD.
That means Hasumi-senpai will be joining us for our activites occasionally... I think. I believe that's the case, but I'm headed there to discuss the details.
If Hasumi-dono is participating then I'm a great deal more interested. There's something about him...
He's always gently instructing me like a parent would.
Be that as it may, I find it hard to adapt to the style of this, how you say, "Deddomanzu".
"Rokkun rorru"... I believe it's called? That unpleasant shouting is lacking in appeal. I aim to carry myself more elegantly than all that.
Rock music can be a bit aggressive, but it might also be a salvation for some. For those born in the shadow of World Wars, it provided hope and a sense of grounding for the soul.
A view that I agree with. That's why I'm going to give it my best in UNDEAD.
You have my full support, Adonis-dono. I admire the way you've a clear vision of what you want to achieve.
I've still a ways to go, at this rate. My drifting from place to place will likely continue.
Ah, but we ought to cease this chatter when you have practice to attend. I'll handle the bill, so feel free to make your leave.
You're right... I'll leave the change here. I hate to leave, but I'll be going now, Kanzaki.

You voice your thoughts so candidly, Adonis-kun. The words that fall from your lips are quite convincing.
You might well shine on a TV commercial.
Will we ever have plans to do that kind of work… ? I feel like commercials for vegetable juice don't really match UNDEAD's dark and edgy image.
Kukuku. That's spot on. A phrase like, "Ah, how delicious is the freshly-squeezed fruit of paradise...!" might certainly be taken for a gag.
We'll need to select work that aligns with current trends. Focusing only on gloomy and cursed content will limit our self-expression.
You can start by expanding and improving your image this very moment, during Resurrection Sunday.
You're an idol, after all. Reach for greater heights.
And while we may be monsters of the darkest night, our darling audience lies within the brilliant sunlight.
To serve as the bridge between both worlds--to reduce the distance; that's a magnificent thing to do, I believe.
Hmm. It sounds difficult... but necessary.
Indeed. Which is why we'll handle the heavy thinking for now. You youths can just concentrate on giving it your all.
Starting with this nourishing meal first thing.
Drink and eat to your heart's content. There's heaps of in-season fruits and vegetables. ♪
It always seems like you're eating nothing but meat, Adonis-kun.
Nourishment is all about balance, not excess. It’s important to plan a well-rounded diet.
But aren't there countries where the people only eat meat?
Only out of necessity. Mankind are omnivores. In a country free from hunger such as this one, one's personal preferences are entirely up to you.
You don't necessarily have any allergies, do you, Adonis-kun?
I don't hate vegetables, if that's what you mean... — the fruit, the vegetables, the juice; all of it's good.
But in order to get stronger I think it's best to eat meat.
Fufu. Such dedication to food. Then there's no sense in trying to guide you any further. Your life is your own, so live it as you like.
Ah — I finally found ya! What’re you havin' such a happy-go-lucky lunchtime for, huh, you damned vampire bastard!
Oh, Puppy. What’s got you so flustered?
There, there. You must’ve missed me so. I’ll give you plenty of attention. Here we gooo. Be sure to fetch the ball when I throw it. ♪
You wanna die?! Quit playin' dumb about what I'm here for already!
I'm no Almighty God, you know.
But yes, I've been busy feigning ignorance towards those who came from outside campus. My head’s spinning, and the sun’s still up.
Then why're we holdin' this event during the day when our performance is gonna take the hit?! I mean, ain't the sunlight gonna do you in?
Think, Puppy. You're no wolf or dog, but a human who's sound of mind.
My clan is much like myself, weak to the light only to dwell in the darkness.
If so many of them were to gather to no avail they'd be a nuisance to the general public unless it's after dark.
Ah, but... I see. Forgive me
They're making everyone uneasy and you've come to me to deal with them?
Yeah. That damn Four-Eyes assembled a buncha people to handle 'em, but it seems like they ain't listening.
It's no use if it ain't you I guess, so get your ass over there.
That suspicious group, huh. I tried to hold them back myself, but as soon as I looked away they vanished and took cover behind something.
They were oddly quick for a group that seemed to be old men. This is the first time anyone's thrown me off the trail. I'm still far too weak.
There's no helping that. We've been running and hiding for hundreds of years... it's wholly different. Pulling the wool over our pursuer's eyes only to disappear is our forte.
Anyhow. There's no way around it, then, even if I'd rather not move about when I'm so listless during the day...
The members of my clan who're especially close to being pure-blooded, much like Ritsu, are particularly weak to the sunlight.
Still they gathered and spurred on just to witness the coming heir's grand occasion. We should welcome them as guests of honor, not shoo them away like beasts.
Guide me to them, Puppy, and hold a parasol up for me if you would.
Tch. You're one time-consuming old man, dammit. I enrolled into Yumenosaki to become an idol, not to nurse the elderly.
I'm aware. Hence my comeback needs to be splendid so I won't continue to wither away.
Until then... I'm afraid I'll keep giving you trouble.
'Course you will. I wouldn't have it any other way. I'd even walk a path of shame 'til the day you're eventually revived.
Let's go, "Sakuma-senpai". Want me to pick you up and carry you if you're feelin' weak in the legs?
There's no need. My feet are still firmly on the ground.

Yes. As you can see, "I, personally6", am not being forced to do this... I'm truly standing here of my own accord.
My answer for you hasn't changed since the day I overcame your opposition and enrolled in Yumenosaki Academy.
And while I can't say there haven't been hardships along the way, the work has been enjoyable and fulfilling.
So please, put your minds at ease. A youth like myself wouldn't dare say something so pretentious, but I think it'd best to look at the long term.
Every day our clan's losing common ground with a world that exists in the bright of day.
You've turned your curious gazes away from your surroundings today as well. I'm sure you've all realized that once again.
I will change all that. Someday, for sure... Being an idol is merely my way of achieving this. By no means am I making light of our plight.
Please find it in yourselves to enjoy today's festivities, and, much like our ancestors, dream of the day we can come to love one another like neighbors.

Oogami. You need to eat too. Have some meat.
... Are you all right? You look pale.
If you're worried about why Hakaze-senpai hasn't shown, apparently he was "delivered" to the stage ahead of time for that ritual.
It'll be fine. We can see that Sakuma-senpai's clan are being convinced into quieting down.
From what we've heard, they're apparently going to watch the stage from a pavilion a little ways away. That way they won't cause any discomfort or fear to anyone around them.
It feels wrong to isolate them, but this way we can mend the situation.
Resurrection Sunday can proceed as planned, without any issues. The audience is also larger than we expected, so I'm sure this'll turn out to be extremely successful.
So don't panic, Oogami. Fill up on meat and keep your chin up just in case we slip up somehow.
Eatin' a lot's just gonna make me sluggish. It'd be bad if one of us got sick on stage. You don't go stuffin' yourself too much either.
... I look miserable 'cause this is the first time in a while that that damn vampire's ever felt so far. But I'm just being bratty. Feelin' sorry for myself.
He's talkin' to them all politely, like a totally different person for some reason...
But who is that over there? It made me realize the usual annoying, old man way of talkin' is really just some character he made up.
Then the Sakuma-senpai we're used seeing is just an act and he's been pretending this whole time without revealing his true self... ? Like he's been lying to us?
Nah, it's not an act. That's just how he is now. But what's with all that false modesty crap? The hell's he mean by "I, personally"? It pisses me the hell off.
But—I can't express myself all that well—but it got me wonderin' what the "real Sakuma-senpai" is like.
Is what we see over there an illusion?
Was it all a lie, an act, a fabrication?
Then who was the guy who spent his youth dancin' and singin' on stage with us?
When I started thinkin' about it I got confused. Now I've got mixed feelings.
Hey, Adonis. I don't get it... I was a huge fan of that guy in the past. I admired him so much I even enrolled into Yumenosaki Academy.
I wanted to be just like him.
I used to think I woulda done whatever it takes forever to become him...
Then I realized, man, I don't understand a damn thing; I'm at a loss for words.
I feel so damn empty, dammit... I can't be like this right before our gig. Time to devour a meal and fire myself up. We're gonna pull this off perfectly, so don't worry, got it?
... Oogami. I don't think I can rid you of your anxiety since I'm not good with words.
But I'm still going to try, since I have no clue about Sakuma-senpai myself.
One day, without warning... he appeared before my eyes. At the center of a crowd wearing tattered rags, he stood like the image of a messiah straight from the Bible.
And he was singing with evident joy, enough to gradually get everyone to imitate him.
Even with their jarring, foreign singing, Sakuma-senpai happily taught everyone how to stay on-key and carry their voices.
Everyone was in a trance... and as the people gathered one after another, their ensemble rang out.
From the starving children, suffering from their hunger, to the plump aristocrats, thinking of nothing but money; there was no disparity in social class there, the difference between each individual indistinguishable.
Just happiness and a song. I was one of them, just blending in with the rest as I started singing too.
I'll always remember that song.
If he — if everything about Sakuma-senpai is just a delusion, then what was that? Could something like that really come to being in this world from an empty void?
I don't think so. He's the wonderful first verse of a song, exactly like the name zero, or "Rei" implies7. In other words, I don't think it means emptiness.
Everything starts from that zero and then continues; ... one, two, three. The sound swells, amplifies and overlaps, resonates far and wide.
It gets harder to see who he is from each beginning, but... I don't think that means our Sakuma-senpai never existed.
Rather, projecting himself like that, like an enormous tree spreading all of its branches; they're all him.
So I believe that Sakuma Rei is an outstanding person.
The one in the past, the one now, and the one right before us8 — they're all "Sakuma Rei".
Chances are we're misjudging him when we only have a single leaf that's fallen from the tree to go off of.
......
F-Forgive me. I did my best to express myself. Was it difficult to understand?
Nah, more like... you're a real sentimental guy, Adonis. Guess we've gotta write song lyrics someday. Fact is, things can't always go my way.
A massive tree, huh. And its roots, with beautiful flowers that're bound to grow huge... hope I end up bein' like that eventually. As someone who was just born human, or as a man, I mean.
You wanna grow big like that too, am I right, Adonis?
Yeah. That's why I'm here in this country as your comrade — as one of UNDEAD.
Translation Notes
- ↑ Keito's follow-up response to Rei's "Bouzu, tomorrow our roads will branch off and never cross again." in Crossroad's Monologue chapter.
- ↑ Rei refers to himself as "Oresama-chan" (俺様ちゃん) here. To keep things consistent with other stories at the time, this is the way I'm going to be translating it.
- ↑ UNDEAD participates in a similarly themed concert titled PirateFes just a year later.
- ↑ Hinata's using the term 食べドル, or more literally put, an "eating idol". It's an idol trend where they promote various foods to increase their amount of dining friends, or fanbase. I opted for the term foodie.
- ↑ A proverb and slight misquotation of a saying by Alexander Pope. It implies that just a little learning on various subjects will mislead you into thinking you're an expert.
- ↑ Rei is using "Watashi" (私) as his pronoun as he speaks in a polite manner to his family members.
- ↑ Rei's name (零) is the numerical zero, which often represents emptiness, nothingness, and the void. Adonis's long-winded explanation stems from that.
- ↑ I had to completely rewrite this scene so it'd make more sense in English, but in a more literal sense he's stating that every Rei they encounter that utilizes different pronouns (俺/我輩/私) to refer to himself are all the same person.
